Optimum page size

Post by joycetrumpet » Sun Jun 16, 2013 3:28 pm

I am scanning and uploading my huge book of charts onto iGig book. I did a test run of about 30 charts and used them on a gig last night...to increase readability I put each chart in landscape, usually with 2-4 pages per chart, and turned my iPad sideways. The landscape mode really helped with readability (the sax player and I are of a certain age, much as we deny it).

However, the page turns were sometimes slow using my AirTurn, and I think that's because I did not pay attention to the pdf file size. Additionally, some of my landscape charts don't match the iPad screen dimensions (because using Preview I'd cut a page at a good page turn, not necessarily at exactly 4.25 x 5.50"). There's obviously a Luddite solution of xeroxing the charts at 140% and then scanning them again, but I believe if I just choose a custom paper size and print to pdf that should work as well. Rather than trial or error--what would be the easiest (fastest) size page for the iPad to render (proportionate or actual)? Or is the main factor affecting speed the pdf file size?

It all boils down to the size of the scan or image of the page. Using settings such as black and white artwork when you scan help and you need to control what the size of the resulting image is. You can scan at 300 DPI as opposed to 600 DPI and pages sizes should be around 3000 pixels wide by 3500 pixels high. Anything above that is going to be slow.
