Using External Monitor with iPhone

Post by markschecter88 » Sun Jan 25, 2015 6:29 pm

Hi, I have iGigBook 2.0 on my iPhone 5S. I like it very much, but would like to use an external monitor for added size. I have a 22" monitor with VGA that I use with my MacBook with good results. Can I use it to view charts that live on my iPhone, and how do I configure that? I have tried using Airplay to an Apple TV, and viewing on an HDMI monitor, and it works kind of, but the resolution is not usable. Is there a cable connector or another way to do this so I can see charts with the same resolution my MacBook produces? Thanks.

We built the capability to show two pages side by side when using an external monitor into iGigBook Mobile back when the VGA was the only adapter. I'm pretty sure they have a lighting connector equivalent. We're in the process of re-visiting that functionality because I believe the resolution on the external monitor isn't as good as it can be. We have a new version due out in a couple of days and probably shortly after that, something to address the resolution of the external display.

Hi, Phil.

Thanks for your reply. I'll get the current upgrade, and will be looking forward to enhancements for external monitors. I have learned that Apple supplies Lightning->VGA and Lightning->HDMI cables. I'll get one asap and let you know how it works. I have both VGA and HDMI monitors so I could test if that's of use to you. Thanks. ~Mark

Hi, Phil,

I'm using the latest version of iGigBook, 2.67.2, and iOS 9.1 on my iPhone5. I have tried again to use it with external monitors via Airplay, and still find the resolution wanting and unusable. However, this time I did an interesting test: I emailed my set list to myself so I could open it in iBooks. Doing that, I could A-B compare the resolution against the same page in iGigBook. Viewing the same file pages in iBooks, it was much better, essentially as clear as when displayed directly from the Mac. This makes me think there is some code in iBooks that compensates in some way for the jump to a much larger screen than the iPhone's, which is not present in iGigBook. This is further corroborated by the fact that the very same file when displayed to the same monitor but directly from my MacBook, using either Adobe Reader or Preview, looks great, sharp, zoomable, and frankly the way I think it should look coming from iGigBook via AirPlay. So the problem is not in the source file itself, just in how it is rendered.

What are the prospects for such an improvement? Thanks very much.

When this was written we began to devote more resources to an Android version and so haven't had a chance to look at this issue and currently do not have a date when we will though at some point we will.

Ok, thanks.

Since I don't have an iPad, I can't test this myself, so can you tell me if the iPad version has this resolution issue with external monitors as well? I need more screen space than the iPad can provide, partly due to my eyesight, so I need an external monitor.

I could view the exported file in another app, but then I lose the easy access to other tunes afforded me by the wonderful indexing system you have created. So does the iPad version drive an external monitor better than the iPhone? Thanks very much.
