Set View enhancements

Post by spinality » Tue Jun 19, 2018 7:45 pm

I’ll mention three possible extensions to the Set Viewer that would save me a lot of time. I suspect they would all be difficult so I’m not expecting any changes; but I’ll mention them in case. The basic issue is making my use of Set View more rapid. I spend a ton of time on this view.

1. Two column display mode. Add a button that displays song titles in two columns, replacing the book names currently in the right column. Preferably with songs listed down the first column, continued in the second column. This would double the number of tunes visible at a time.

2. Compact display mode. Let me toggle the amount of space per title row. The default gives me 20 titles per page. But there’s a lot of space between titles — I bet we could comfortably show 25-30. The default is good, but at times seeing more would be a help.

3. Simple edit mode in Set View. This is the hardest but the most desirable (for me). It would save much time if an edit mode could be added, to let me (just) change the order of titles, and delete titles. Then I’d only need to go to the Set Manager when adding songs etc. Changing song order on the bandstand is very common, and flipping over to the Set Manager takes a few extra steps.

All of these thugs are easily done with the existing app. But the Set View is the heart of the app for me, and if I could do a little more directly from there, it would be fantastic.

With regards to item number 3.

Any editing in the Gig Set view requires you to tap something to initiate the process, the Set List Manager is a tap away and you're ready to edit. Where's the time savings?

There are a few factors here. The biggest one is screen real estate. The Set List Manager gives me 25% of the screen for my current set list. (The top half is for search results, etc., and the lower left quarter is for selecting a set list.) In contrast, the Set View shows me a full page of titles. I can see much more of the actual performance. There's a good chance the song I'm after is right there on the first page.

Regarding the number of taps/steps: when I go to the set List Manager, I will often need to switch to the set list of interest -- so there is some additional scrolling and a tap needed. Then I must scroll down through the song titles within the Manager, in that little sub-window to reach the one I want. (Suppose I'm moving the last two songs to the top. This can involve a lengthy scrolled drag-and-drop in that little window.) Eventually, once I've finished with the Manager, I return to the viewer -- and must scroll back down to where I was.

None of this is difficult. The system works well in its current form, obviously -- but because it involves a number of steps, we usually just make such changes orally, without updating the set list. "Let's move the waltz in the last set to the end of the first set."

So again: my wish-list request isn't because I think it's hard to get to the Set List Manager (it isn't). It's because the Set List Manager is intended to do many things, with the searching features being the most important. It is mostly used before the gig. The Set View, on the other hand, is mostly a performance tool for displaying songs in the right order. You can see many more titles at once. If I could use that view to adjust list order, it would be even more useful on the bandstand.

I hope this is clear. Again, these are just wish-list comments. If it doesn't make sense to you, maybe our usage methods are unusual.
