The icon (on my iPad) has a little "1" with a red circle. I know that means update, but it's been there for days and I can't seem to find the trick to make it go away. What am I missing?

Go to the settings app and turn off notifications for iGigBook. Return to the iGigBook app and close it by double taping the home key and swiping the app up. Run the app again and the notification should be gone.
