Can't get started--can't find my Real Book

Post by shepdave »

Having heard about this app from other musicians, I bought it today on my iPad, also bought vol. 1 of the Hal Leonard Real Book (RB 6th edition). Now I am stuck. Nothing about the set up works.

When I bought the Real Book PDF version, iOS put it directly into the iBooks folder. I.e., it's on my iPad. However, it does not show up in iGigBook at all. Moreover, when I look for the index code for this Real Book in Book List, it isn't listed. I see elsewhere that "there is" a code for the Hal Leonard RB vol. 1, I just cannot get to it.

Having spent a total of $46 on the app and the Real Book file today, I am pretty frustrated that I cannot make this work. I would appreciate some specific guidance. I've read all the tutorials. None of them seem to address the situation of having your PDF in the iBooks folder (because that's where the I pad pour it when I purchased it).

The book that you have, Real Book 6th Edition is in the list of indexes that we provide:

Current Book Index List

You're referring to it as Hal Leonard RB vol. 1, if that's what you're looking for, this is the reason you can't find it.

There is no "iBooks" folder in iGigBook, there is an iGigBook Documents folder accessible via iTunes as described in this post:

Oh my. No no. I know what the Hal Leonard volume 1 is called in your lists. I used the correct name when I looked for it. I have found it in the lists here on the forum and in the help files in the app.

It does not show up, however, in the list in the Book List section of the app. That list only contains 32 titles that do not include this book. (It was visible when I first opened the app, right after I bought it, but that list has since shrunk to 32 books.)

But that is not my biggest problem.

I know there is no "iBooks section" in your app. You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. When I downloaded the Real Book file from the Apple app store, using my iPad, it went directly into iBooks. I can read it on my iPad as an iBook. I just cannot bring it into iGigBook. iGigBook does not show it as available. It is on my device, but not visible in your app.

How do I make it show up in iGigBook when it resides in the iBooks folder?

Let me follow up on my last reply. I looked again at your tutorial, and you refer to "iTunes," presumably on my Macintosh laptop computer. Is the real takeaway that I have to hook up my iPad to a laptop, sync it, and ONLY THEN bring the PDF into iGigBook? Is there no way to do this operation on my iPad alone?

When you purchase a book via the App Store app, those items are serviced by the iBooks app. These items are often NOT a PDF file. The file is usually in some other format that has DRM (Digital Rights Management) applied to it. iOS generally does not allow applications to share information, the item you have in iBooks can only be used in iBooks and no other app.

The process of adding files via iTunes from your computer does not involve "syncing". Sorry if it sounds like I'm nitpicking here, but the language is very important and must be specific to distinguish between different things. When you use iTunes, you're using the File Sharing feature of iTunes to copy content to and from your device.

But none of this matters, since you're telling me the only way I can get this into your app is to find some scanned (pirated?) PDF of it out on the internet, not by legitimately purchasing it from the Apple app store.

I truly feel as though I just wasted $15. I know, I know, it's my own responsibility to acquire my own PDF files. Well, that's what I thought I was doing this morning. Wrong.

This isn't what I'm saying to you at all. I can understand you are frustrated, that however does not give you the right to misrepresent or make up what I have written. Do not do this again, take this as a warning, we don't like banning people, but we will ban you if you do this again.

If you wanted the Hal Leonard Real Books, you could have taken this route: How To Use Real Book CD ROMs With iGigBook

You didn't purchase a PDF file that rarely happens when you buy a title via the App Store or from the Kindle app, this isn't made clear to you by Apple or by Hal Leonard. It's not fair for us to take the hit for that. The money you wasted may very well be for the book you purchased via iBooks that you can only use in iBooks and no where else.

Well, I just learned this in a rather expensive way. I just went onto the Hal Leonard website, where they push these books as "available digitally" on the App Store and via Amazon Kindle. In fact, it is not clear on their site that the CD-ROM or flash-drive versions are in fact PDF files.

It's perhaps not fair for you to "take the hit" on that, but I do think you could make it somewhat clearer in your app description the fact that the end use has to be especially careful to buy a non-Apple, non-Kindle digital version of these books for them to work. I have had to dig pretty deeply into the Internet today, including your forum, to learn this.

I have never purchased a music-indexing app before, and this was far from obvious to me. And I am not a technology-naif. I had no frame of reference within which to make any of these assumptions.

All right, I decided to start again.

I purchased what I know is a PDF file of The New Real Book Vol 1 from Sher Music. I downloaded it to my laptop. I followed your instructions for going into iTunes with my iPad connected, scrolling down to the File Sharing section, adding the file to iGigBook.

Once that happened and I disconnected my device, I attempted to follow your instructions about indexing this PDF. I looked at your list, determined that the Book Code is nrealbk1d, since what I have is New Real Book 1 - Digital Edition. I went into the My Scores section, clicked and held the file name, and renamed it as the Book Code.

When I then went to the My Scores section of iGigBook, there was an item named nrealbk1d.pdf. However, when I clicked on it (or pressed and held to get the indexing menu to pop up), I got the following message:
nrealbk1d.pdf Not Found Please COPY this book to your device
I do not know how to copy this book to my device in any way other than what I have already done.

I went into iTunes with iPad connected, scrolled to iGigBook, and deleted that file so as to start over again. I re-added the file I downloaded from Sher, with the original name. However, My Scores still shows a listing for nrealbk1d.pdf. When I try to select that, I get the same error message.

I have run a sync of the iPad after every iteration of deleting and adding. I also have quit iGigBook each time. I have not restarted the iPad the past few times.

I would once again appreciate any specific advice. So far I haven't been able to open a single file in iGigBook, yet I think I have followed the instructions in the help files.
