I need scanning guidance

Post by shepdave »

After a frustrating first day, I think I am very slowly figuring out some of the ins and outs of iGigBook. I have a specific set of questions regarding scanning.

I decided to scan each page of my hard-copy Hal Leonard Real Book vol. 1 (6th edition). I scanned at black and white, at 300 dpi. (I realize now, having read another thread, that my resolution is probably too high, which explains the large file size, so I'll reduce to 150 dpi for the last half of the book.)

I'm creating an individual PDF for each page of the Real Book. This, of course, means that the two-page songs occupy two files.

I plan to assemble my own overall PDF file of the book once I've gotten everything scanned. My question is how to put it together so the index interfaces with it properly.

Should the pages be in page-number order, or should they be in alphabetical order by title? A couple of responses to similar threads I've read didn't make this 100% clear. The index pages in the hard-copy Real Book list the songs alphabetically, but they refer to the page numbers. That is, in the actual book, the songs do not appear strictly in alphabetical order. (I'm sure this is to accommodate the user who is reading a two-page chart, so the song is readable the spread-open book.)

So, the question is: alpha order or page-number order in the PDF file that I build?

Thanks.

The pages need to be assembled so that if you looked in the index that is in the front of the book for "Autumn Leaves" you would go to page 39 of that book an see the chart for "Autumn Leaves". Every page in this book has a page number, starting with 10 "African Flower" and ending with 462 "You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You". The index that iGigBook uses to fetch the correct chart is based on the index in the actual physical book that you have. If you put the book together wrong, meaning leave out pages, rearrange them, the index will not work with the PDF. Page 10 to page 462 is the order it needs to be in or in the order of the actual physical book that you have in your possession.

I may seem dim, but I need to understand completely.

The list of songs in the front of my Real Book reads in alphabetical order. The page numbers of the actual songs do not correspond to alphabetical order.

So my pages need to be in PAGE NUMBER order, not the order in which the songs are listed in the index, right?

Sorry if this seems obtuse, but I don't want to make a mistake with this.

The physical book is in page number order, this is true for all books and sometimes because the book is in page number order it also is in alphabetical order. Every page of the book that has a song also has a page number and if you look at your physical book the songs start at page 10 "African Flower" and end at page 462 "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You". When you put the PDF together it must be in the same order as the physical book which is not the order in which you see the items in the index of the book.
