The New Real Book index mismatch

Post by jhoadley »

The index for the new real book volume one does not match with the PDF I have. I read your response, Phil, from September 2023, explaining that users confuse the table of contents and the index. Nevertheless… I have a physical copy and the first song is affirmation. The first song in my PDF is affirmation when I link your index to my PDF, following your instructions, and I search for affirmation in Song Search it shows 3 results. One is the new real book and when I click on it, it takes me to (All of a sudden) my heart sings on pg 13.

Where I am to link the index to my PDF it shows 236 titles whereas the book has around 438 pages.

Also, the image that gets pulled in when I link your index file to my PDF is wrong. It pulls in the real book 2nd edition, volume two, a pink cover.

I just installed the app today on a brand new iPad. I just bought today. The New real book Volume 2 index worked fine.

I know this is a labor of love for you and the support you offer is free.I’ve been using iGigBook since 2019.

One other note… Nowhere on the PDF does it say volume one. The title is legal C and vocal version the new real book same with my physical copy.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I read a reply, saying the user linked to the wrong index. I remember there’s an interface where you can activate additional book titles. Since my book is not volume one, I found the new real book digital edition. When I linked my PDF to that new title… After synchronizing with the server…It points to a different incorrect song called Alto Itis.

But this is likely the problem… Finding an index in your library for the new real book.

Thinking I may need to rename my PDF to match the code for the book, I did that. It did not help. However… I’m prevented from synchronizing with the server due to quota 🙈

The song "(All of a Sudden) My Heart Sings" in not in "The New Real Book", you have the physical copy of the book and can verify this. This would be the first clue that you have linked a PDF to the wrong index.
Where I am to link the index to my PDF it shows 236 titles whereas the book has around 438 pages.
Titles as in "Song Titles" and Pages are two different things. A single song can have multiple pages.
Also, the image that gets pulled in when I link your index file to my PDF is wrong. It pulls in the real book 2nd edition, volume two, a pink cover.
No, the PDF you linked to the index, by pressing and holding in My Scores or renaming the PDF is not "The New Real Book". If you view the PDF prior to linking it to an index, you should not have this issue.
One other note… Nowhere on the PDF does it say volume one. The title is legal C and vocal version the new real book same with my physical copy.
Since there is a volume 2 and a volume 3, the first "The New Real Book" would be volume 1.

Calling it Volume 1 distinguishes it from 2 and 3 - yes - but v1 doesn’t appear on the physical copy or PDF. A retronym!

Will try to rematch again when I am out of server “refresh” jail. How many refreshes per day are permitted, 3?

You do not need to sync in order to link a PDF to an index that already exists in your Book List View.

The index for NRB Volume 1 was not in my Book List view. I go to Settings and activate new titles. Then a sync is necessary after that. Yep, I see NRB Volume 1 in my Book List now.

OK, I link to your New Real Book Volume 1 index. And…

Affirmation —> Affirmation
Airegin —> Airegin
All of Me —> Always There
All The Things You Are —> Always There pg 2

I think this is why I stopped using iBook 4 or 5 years ago. I ended up manually creating CSV text files and it took so long (hours, days!) I eventually felt it was too much effort.

But if this ever works, it will be great. Having a way to search across all your real books, etc. is the Holy Grail. So thank you for making this software available - and clearly it works for a lot of people.

OK I see my PDF is missing pages 3 and 4. I think the fix for all this, now, is to make sure my PDF matches the index. Thank you.

You have the physical book, you can easily check that against the PDF. In this instance you would immediately see that page 3 and 4 is missing from your PDF.

iGigBook does work, it is great.

Whenever you haven't scanned a book yourself or didn't purchase it from the publisher, you have to check the PDF to assure it has all of pages present and in the correct order. Sher Music sells a PDF of this book titled: "The New Real Book (Digital Edition)". It has all of the pages present and we have an index for it.
