The default is -2 because most copies of this PDF floating around are missing the first two pages and the book cover, if it had those the offset would be +2, without the book cover, 0.

The default offset is selected by looking at the index of the physical book. In the case of the "Real Jazz Book" the numbering begins right after the front cover of the book, which is why the first tune is on page 17 in the index of the physical book. In contrast, "Real Book 5th Edition" has the first tune "A Call For Demons" as page 1 in the index of the physical book with 13 pages prior which includes the cover of the book, because of this, it has an offset of +13.

I'm not sure what you're asking here...are you having a problem with setting an offset and then the offset changing after a new sync
