Worst case scenario - data concern

Post by aaronbrownsound »

Hey Phil,

Obviously I hope it never comes to this and you are very on top of things with this app in the forums. I mean no disrespect to you as a developer. However, I've seen a few unrelated developers have issues lately and even abandon their users without notice. It made me slightly nervous about the server side nature of this app. Is there a back up plan for if something happened to the server? If for some reason this app was abandoned or the server had issues I'd hate to think of losing all my data, bulk uploads, and indexes. This unlikely event would probably make this app unusable considering it needs to connect and sync for any changes.

If the worst case scenario occurred for some reason is there a simple way for us to get our user data back or work out a way to keep an alternate server up? Sorry to bring this up, but I'll sleep better knowing the answer.

I tried to write you personally, but couldn't see a private message link.

With any cloud based solution no matter how robust, data that you put on it can disappear at anytime due to any number of factors, events or conditions, which is why you need to have your own backup, if you don't have your own backup, you run the risk of losing that data.

iGigBook does not require the internet or connection to the server in order to operate and so if the server went down, or went away, it would still be usable though one wouldn't be able to add, change any of the user created index data. For the 95% of the users this wouldn't have any impact at all because they don't have their own indexes.

If you uploaded a copy of your data using Bulk Upload, what data would you need to get back? Does this mean that when you uploaded the data, you deleted every instance of it from your own computer? On a serious note, we do everything we can to keep the server running but we don't guarantee anything, there are no warranties of any kind.

I keep my indexes, but rely on many shared indexes that I don't have the actual data for. If something happened I'd lose indexes for all those books. It would just be good to know that I could get the index data for our books in some format if things ever went south. The boy scout in me likes to always be prepared :)

Of course we keep our hundreds hours of creating indexes save at our own disks, but the least we can expect is that we can Bulk Upload it again in case of a disaster at your side. And it seems that you made that impossible!
If there's a disaster, there will be nothing for you to bulk upload to or download from until recovery from the disaster has occurred.
Then a question what crosses my mind: is the index data from my iPad saved together with the app at my PC? I just suppose so!? The second question is when I buy a new iPad can I just copy that saved app again from my PC and use it without the need of syncing again?

Rob
The only way to get an app on a device is through iTunes or the App Store app, unless of course your device is jail broken.

If someone shares an index with you, they can at anytime not share that index with you.

robipad wrote: That is clear, but my question was related to the index data. A new App Store app does not contain any synced data. My question is related to the synced index data stored on the iPad. Is this index data also saved on my PC via iTunes when I sync the iPad with my PC? In other words when my iPad is completely erased I expect that after reïnstalling my iTunes back-up everything is functioning again without the need of syncing with my.igigbook.com?

Rob
I can't really answer this for you because I didn't create the iTunes PC/Device backup system. One would assume that the answer is yes, but you would need to perform that operation or check with Apple to verify that.
